Helicopter-borne Magnetics (HMG)
The BGR helicopter (Sikorsky S-76B) is used for airborne geophysical surveying of the Earth’s subsurface. The standard equipment comprises the methods electromagnetics, magnetics and radiometrics. The passive helicopter-borne magnetic (HMG) measuring system is a cesium magnetometer, which is installed into the HEM bird about 40 m beneath the helicopter. The total intensity of the Earth’s magnetic field is recorded. After reduction of the Earth’s main field and the diurnal variations, the resulting anomalies of the Earth’s magnetic field are displayed.
