10-minute station observations of max wind gust at ca. 10 m above ground in m/s for Germany

The wind gust is the highest 3-second value within a 10-minute interval.

The measurements are assigned to a timestamp in UTC which marks the end of the 10-minute interval.


These data originate from the stations of the DWD and qualitatively as well as legally equivalent partner networks. Station metadata (station relocations, instrument changes, change of reference time, changes in the algorithms) are supplied when downloading via the CDC portal.

Specific usage

Data sets with quality level QN=1 can sometimes contain significant errors. Before usage, it should be considered whether the 10-minute data, which may contain errors, should be used or whether the better verified hourly or daily values should be used for the respective analyses. For trend analyses, the station-specific metadata must be taken into account. Compared to the other parameters, many (and large) inhomogeneities are to be expected in the time series for wind speed and wind direction. Often caused by changes in the sensor height (see station-specific metadata), but also by changing local conditions (buildings, growing trees), which may not have been recorded.

Specific usage

The stations in the DWD monitoring networks are set up and operated according to WMO regulations.

Stations in the equivalent partner networks may deviate from WMO regulations.

Depending on the application, local, regional and influences changing with time should be considered, which can be location- and parameter specific.

Sources of long-term uncertainty are:

- changes in station height when station was re-located

- changes in instrumentation

- varying quality control procedures (Behrendt et al., 2011)

- errors during data transfer or errors in the software

- change of observing personnel

- and others (Freydank, 2014)

Explanation

Procedures of quality assurance are explained in Kaspar et al., 2013: several steps of quality control, automated quality control based on the software QualiMET (see Spengler, 2002) for completeness, temporal and spatial consistency, and against statistical thresholds have been applied from 2003 onwards. Corrections in the high resolution recordings are routinely passed on to aggregated values (i.e., the hourly and daily values). Some doubtful values might still exist, especially in data before 2009. No homogenization has been carried out.

Data before and including 1980 can reach as best quality check level QN=5. Data after 1980 can reach QN=10 as best quality check level.
