The research cruise is a continuation of BGR’s marine geoscientific studies in the South China Sea and in the Sulu Sea with the German research vessels VALDIVIA (1977), SONNE (1982/83) and EXPLORA (1984). The previous investigations provided new information regarding the geological and tectonic history of the southern part of the South China Sea in the context of plate tectonics. According to the interpretation of the large amount of geophysical, geological and geochemical data collected by BGR on previous cruises the widely accepted hypotheses of the presence of an ancient subduction zone beneath the Sabah-Palawan Trough has to be revised. The main objective of the EXPLORA cruise was to search for an Oligocene-Early Miocene carbonate platform off Sabah and in the western Sulu Sea. On the continental margin off Sabah 27 lines were surveyed with gravity and multichannel reflection seismics and partly with magnetics, with a total length of 3,126 km. A strong reflector interpreted as reflector BLUE of previous BGR cruises off Palawan was recognizable beneath the Sabah Trough in depth between 4 and 7 sec (TWT). The isochrones of the reflector strike approximately 50°N. The surface of the reflector dips with 2 to 3 degree towards southeast. Toward the north-western part of the Sabah Trough the reflector is disrupted by a basement high. According to the preliminary interpretation of the gravity data, the prominent free-air anomaly associated with the Sabah Trough and adjacent areas has the same shape as the anomaly observed across the Palawan Trough. Therefore it is concluded that the Sabah Trough is underlain by a thinned continental crust. Im Rahmen von internationalen geowissenschaftlichen Projekten und in enger Zusammenarbeit mit PETRONAS, Malaysia, sowie mit Zustimmung des Bureau of Mineral Resources (BMR) und des Bureau of Energy Development (BED), Manila, führte die BGR im Zeitraum vom 20. Juli bis zum 10. August 1986 mit dem gecharterten MS EXPLORA der Firma Prakla-Seismos eine geophysikalische Forschungsfahrt am Kontinentrand vor Sabah im malaysischen Teil von Borneo durch. Diese wurde vom 12. August bis zum 28. August 1986 in der nordwestlichen Sulu-See fortgesetzt. Diese Forschungsfahrt ist eine Fortführung der marinen geowissenschaftlichen Untersuchungen im Südchinesischen Meer und in der Sulu-See, die von der BGR mit den deutschen Forschungsschiffen VALDIVIA (1977), SONNE (1982/83) und EXPLORA (1984) in den vorhergehenden Jahren bereits initiiert wurden. Die früheren Untersuchungen lieferten neue Erkenntnisse im Hinblick auf die geologische und tektonische Entwicklung des südlichen Teils des Südchinesischen Meeres und erlaubten Rückschlüsse zur plattentektonischen Entwicklung der Region. Durch die Interpretation von umfangreichen geophysikalischen, geologischen und geochemischen Daten, die von der BGR auf den früheren Fahrten gewonnen wurden, muss die allgemein akzeptierte Hypothese der Existenz einer alten Subduktionszone unter dem Sabah-Palawan-Trough revidiert werden. Das Hauptziel der EXPLORA-Fahrt war die Suche nach einer Karbonatplattform aus dem Oligozän bzw. frühen Miozän vor Sabah und in der westlichen Sulu-See. Auf dem Kontinentrand vor Sabah wurden dazu 27 Profillinien mit einer Gesamtlänge von 3.126 km gravimetrisch und mit Mehrkanalseismik sowie partiell mit magnetischen Methoden vermessen. Ein markanter Reflektor, der als Reflektor BLUE bei den früheren Forschungsfahrten vor Palawan interpretiert wurde, war auch unter dem Sabah Trough in Tiefen von 4 bis 7 sec (TWT) erkennbar. Die Isochronen des Reflektors streichen ungefähr in Richtung 50°N. Die Oberfläche des Reflektors senkt sich um 2° bis 3° südöstlich ab, während er zum nordwestlichen Teil des Sabah Trough hin durch hochstehendes Basement unterbrochen wird. Die Interpretation der gravimetrischen Messungen ergibt, dass die prägnante Freiluft-Anomalie des Sabah Trough und der benachbarten Gebiete dieselbe Form wie die des Palawan Trough besitzt.
