Hourly 2D- and 3D-parameters of the regional reanalysis COSMO-REA6

This dataset is a subset from the regional reanalysis COSMO-REA6, which is based on COSMO-EU model version 4.25. The calculations were performed within the HErZ project at University of Bonn (up to 2014) and extended afterwards by DWD until the dataset was finished in August 2019.

Maintenance note

This version is a result of a research project. It is possible that errors in the metadata or the data itself are detected and corrected. That will be documented in the file ( https://opendata.dwd.de/climate_environment/REA/Change_log_REA_OD.txt ), however, no versions of the COSMO-REA6 dataset will be saved.

COSMO-REA6 will not be continued past August 2019 because the boundary conditions ERA-Interim were discontinued.

Specific usage

The wind components are given for the rotated longitude-latitide grid of the COSMO-model. Before a calculation of wind direction, the horizontal wind components have to be converted to geographical co-ordinates, see Schulz und Schättler, 2014, section 4.1.4. For calculation of the scalar wind velocity, the co-ordinate transormation is not relevant. The latitudes and longitudes are given for the center of the grid cell. The model gives wind components for the corners of the grid cell (not the center of the grid cell). For further processing (i.e., shifting half a grid cell) the climate data operators (cdo) are recommended, see, e.g., an example to getting started ( https://opendata.dwd.de/climate_environment/REA/COSMO_REA6/help_COSMO_REA6/COSMO_REA6_Startbeispiel.pdf ) and

start help ( https://opendata.dwd.de/climate_environment/REA/COSMO_REA6/help_COSMO_REA6/COSMO_REA6_Starthilfe.pdf ). The latter document also explains the peculiarities of grib1 format handling.

Specific usage

The reanalysis combines observations and model given the boundary conditions to obtain an optimal estimate for the atmosphere. Uncertainties are caused by model errors, errors of the observing system, errors by the data assimilation technique and by boundary condition errors. The aim of the reanalysis is to treat these uncertainties in the data assimilation process. Note that the resulting analysis is valid on a larger scale, i.e., local effects are not captured. The nominal resolution is 6km x 6km; the effective resolution is coarser and determined by the resolution of dynamical processes within the COSMO-model. A rule of thumb for the highest resolution to consider is 5 grid cells, keeping in mind that many small scale processes are neither observed nor modelled. It can be expected that the reanalysis captures the synoptic scale (weather systems) very well.

Supplemental Information

Known problems: artifacts due to low-quality pressure measurements which have been nudged (some cases were found over the Atlantic). These can lead to small-scale, rather stationary storms, an unrealistic feature which lasts only a few hours.

The fields are provided in the original COSMO format (DWD grib1). For convenience, the data are packed into monthly archives. They are compressed with bzip2 resulting in sizes of 0.8 GB per archive, respectively. After decompressing with bunzip2 the *.grb files can be processed with the ecCodes (grib tool by ECMWF), the CDO (climate data operators), or the outdated tool wgrib.

Explanation

Validation studies for wind speed have been performed by comparing against station data (Kaiser-Weiss et al., 2015 and Niermann et al., 2019) and against wind tower measurements (Borsche et al., 2016) on the inter-annual, annual, monthly, daily and hourly scale and correlations confirm a realistic time evolution wind speed, and realistic relative frequency distributions and reasonable correlation coefficients with observations over Germany, for representative topography. The absolute value has to be used with care, as it depends on how the model topograpy relates to the real topography. This will be highly location dependent and requires own validation studies or transfere functions before use. Wind direction depend heavily on local topography and should be used after detailed and purpose oriented own validation, only.

Statement

The regional reanalysis is driven by the global reanalysis ERA-Interim at the boundaries (Dee et al., 2011), with updated boundary conditions every 3 hours and interpolated linearly in between. The COSMO model version is a fixed version 4.25 of 28th September 2012, driven with a 6-hourly snow analysis, 24-hourly sea surface temperature (SST)-analysis and 24-hourly soil moisture analysis. Data assimilation comprises contineous nudging of conventional observations (radiosondes, aircraft, wind profiler and surface level observations). The COSMO-REA6 regional reanalysis system is described in Bollmeyer et al., 2015. The regional reanalysis COSMO-REA6 was developed within the HErZ-cooperation at University of Bonn, covering 1995-2014, and was extended afterwards up to August 2019 by DWD.
