Das digitale Geländemodell beschreibt die Geländeoberfläche durch ein regelmäßiges Punktraster. Von jedem Rasterpunkt sind die Lage und die Höhe bekannt. Die Aktualisierung erfolgt im 6-Jahres-Turnus.

Für das DGM wird die Laserscanner-Messaufnahme als Erfassungsmethode der Primärdaten (Laserscandaten) genutzt. Die Bereitstellung erfolgt im Höhenreferenzsystem DHHN2016. Die Höhengenauigkeit der Gitterpunkte beträgt +/- 0,15 m.
