Geotope in M-V

Geotope stellen erdgeschichtliche Bildungen der unbelebten Natur dar, die Erkenntnisse über die Entwicklung oder des früheren Lebens auf der Erde vermitteln. Geotope umfassen Gesteine, Fossilien, Landschaftsformen und Quellbildungen. Geotope gleicher Genese werden zu Geotoptypen zusammengefaßt. Gesetzlich geschützt sind diejenigen Geotope, die sich durch ihre besondere erdgeschichtliche Bedeutung, Seltenheit oder Eigenart auszeichnen. Für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Lehre sind sie Dokumente von besonderem Wert. Sie lassen sich aufgrund ihrer besonderen Eigenschaften von der Umgebung klar abgrenzen.
