SYNOP ground weather reports

The German Weather Service (DWD) operates various ground monitoring networks. The most important measuring network for weather monitoring and forecasting is the full-time station network of the DWD and the Geoinformation Service of the German Armed Forces, which comprises around 220 stations. Synoptic reports are provided from this monitoring network. The DWD stations provide hourly and half-hourly synoptic reports as well as 10-minute values. Only hourly reports are currently available from the stations of the Geoinformation Service of the German Armed Forces. The synoptic messages are encoded in BUFR format in accordance with WMO key FM 94. In addition to the full-time monitoring network, the DWD also operates a part-time monitoring network. The secondary monitoring network comprises around 300 stations, the so-called AMDA III stations (AMDA = Automatic Meteorological Data Acquisition System) or MODES III stations (MODES = Modular Data Acquisition System). The measurement programme at the part-time weather stations is limited compared to the full-time stations. At the AMDA III/S and MODES III/S stations (S = standard), the air temperature, humidity and precipitation height are measured every hour and every half hour, and at selected stations the sunshine duration, ground temperature and wind direction and speed are also measured. The data is disseminated as synoptic short messages.
